NORTH Petherton junior golfer Joe Young, 14, has narrowly missed out on victory at the American Golf Junior Championship final, where he took on qualifiers from all over the UK and Ireland at Gainsborough Golf Club.

On one of the toughest courses in the region, Young played some fantastic golf to return a hugely impressive score of 34 points in the Upper Nett category, the category designed for those who have recently taken up the game.

On any other day this would have been enough to take home the title, but Young came up against Ruaridh Clubb from East Lothian who put together the round of his life with a score of 35 to take home the title by a point.

Young, who attends Wellington School and is a member at Enmore Park Golf Club, was delighted with his experience at the American Golf Championship.

He said: “The tournament was very good experience and it was great to have Sky Sports filming it.

“I want to thank David and Nigel at Enmore Park for helping me prepare for the Junior Championship.

“I think I played well but needed to hole more putts to win.

“I will be back next year to try again!”

ENMORE Royals retained the bragging rights over their neighbours in the away match at Cannington, as they retained the Challenge Cup in sunny conditions on Saturday.

Geoff Rooke and Glynn Sewell had the home side’s only win, following captain Trevor Webb and Nick Prince’s halved match with Rob Fear and Vince Coombs.

Thereafter, the visitors took the match 4.5-1.5, with victories from Richard Sykes and Andrew Roff, Alexander Blackman and Steve Darch, Nick Hughes and Alan Hurford, and Gilmour Thomson and Jeff Saunders.

The focus now turns to next Saturday’s MET Shield, the annual triangular match with Tiverton and Minehead, with the Royals playing at home, the A teams at Minehead and the Juniors at Tiverton.
