ENMORE Park golfer David Dixon looked a possible winner of the West Region PGA Championship, after opening with a five-under-par round of 67.

Ultimately he faltered in the second round, scoring 73 to share 14th, but he is still on track to reach the end-of-season playoffs in Turkey.

The leading three players from each of seven PGAC regions compete for places in the following season’s European and Challenge Tour events.

Dixon remains in third place behind Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle) and Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge), with the final event at The Point at Polzeath, Cornwall, next month.

Hendriksen claimed the main championship title at The Players Club, near Bristol.

Enmore Park’s defence of their Avalon Seniors title came to a shattering halt last week, as the wheels came off in matches at Tall Pines and Taunton & Pickeridge.

Only Wayne Hawley, with partner John Taylor, found any sort of form to gain points at Tall Pines, while a whitewash at Pickeridge was only avoided by Paddy McLennan and Chris Marsh salvaging a half.

Having topped the table for much of the summer, it leaves Enmore relying on the results of matches involving other teams if they are to proceed to the semi-finals.

It got no better in the short trip over the Quantocks to the Oake Manor club.

With no excuses about bad weather, long journeys or unfamiliar conditions, Enmore were left scratching their heads after coming away on the end of a 7½-½ beating.

Only Jeff Saunders with John Newell left with some respect.

The big event of the week was Enmore’s “Quantock Stag” whereby 15 visiting clubs, plus Enmore, send teams of eight to contest the Stag trophy.

In fine weather the golf was keenly played with the Long Ashton seniors coming in as winners, with a combined total of 170 points.

The Enmore “eight” of Steve James, Ian Edwards, Steve Lukins, Mike Sullivan Dave Pascoe, Mike Rossiter, Doug Read and Kevin Lewis were runners-up with 169.

Conditions were good on Sunday afternoon for the conclusion to the Mixed Summer League.

Colin Galbraith and Angie Brown won the Rigler Salver with 43 points, ahead of Ron and Lin Brown in second with 42 points.

John and Annette Rigler were third with 41 points.

Congratulations go to Kevin Lewis, who had a hole in one at the par-three second hole last week, after which it was drinks all round!

Meanwhile, Daphne Priddy, with a nett 68, was the winner in the Silver Division of last week’s Medal and Grass Roots Qualifier.

Second place was claimed by Judith Sperring, but only after countback put her ahead of Julie Blumgart after both scored 73.

In the Bronze Division it was Lorraine Taylor with nett 69 who was the winner, and so she qualifies for the Somerset Ladies County Golf Association Grass Roots Trophy.

Jenny Butcher was second with 73, while third place was claimed by Joanne Wyatt with 74.

Friday evening’s 9-hole Flag was won by Hilary Cockcroft with one shot to play up the 10th.

This was a very enjoyable social competition that involved 27 ladies, followed by a fish and chip supper.

The final of the Bush Cup Club Singles KO was played on Saturday.

At the end of a very tight match it was Hannah Woodley who beat Janet Hambly on the 19th.
