THE participants in Sunday’s August medal at Brean produced some stunning scoring in sweltering heat.

Two players returned scores of nett 61, the lowest nett scores of the Summer so far but both were in the same division.

Steve Mason and Neil Barker were the proud owners of the superb scorecards and Mason was the happier of the pair as he won on a countback to take first place.

Jim Puddy was third in that division with a nett 66.

John Rabbetts raced away with the Division Three award after his nett 63 which gave him a three stroke cushion over Nigel Ellis with John Ham a further three strokes back.

A countback was also required to separate the leading duo in Division One after two identical gross 73’s and nett 68’s from Steve Bateman and Matt Shaw. Bateman was declared the winner on the back nine with Matt’s father Russell taking third on nett 70.

Thirty pairs contested the re-arranged CLAPA Charity Open on Saturday raising funds for the South West Cleft Unit. The format was a betterball stableford with both players scores counting on the five par-threes within the layout.

These five holes a were crucial to success and the winning duo played them well. Ian Rogers and Barry Brindley returned a winning score of 57 points which was two better than their nearest challengers.

The Broom cousins, Tom and Dan, took second spot with 55 points which included no less than four two’s between them.

The highlight of those was Tom’s eagle two at the 10th.

Third place was secured with the 54 points that Paul Bacon and Dave Mann accumulated which left them one ahead of two pairs on 53.

Team captain Elect, Lyn Bird and Trevor Pitt, won a back nine countback with Kevin Davies and Byron Lismore to take the final prize.

Liz Blackwell claimed the Ladies Bogey Trophy with a stunning score of +7 on Thursday morinng.

On a day when over half the field beat their handicaps she won by three from Linda Edmondson with Lesley Millard taking third on +3.

All three ladies saw their handicaps reduced.

The Seniors Over-65s Shield produced a close finish with three players returning scores of 41 points.

New member John Procter was joined by 2017 Seniors Captain Ray Byatt and another past Captain in the form of Mike Allen on that score.

Allen was declared the winner though as he had the better back nine score of the trio and with it denying Procter a debut win.

Byatt had to settle for third on what was another day of low scoring for the Seniors.

Chris Stephens led his Seniors team to another home win when they whitewashed their Cricket St Thomas counterparts last week.

All six games went the way of the in form homesters but it wasn’t all plain sailing for them.

Stephens awarded his team of the day to John Hale and Roger Williams who won by 2&1 despite trailing by four holes earlier in the round.

The Smith domination of Midweek Stableford’s continued as Mike Smith picked up the win this week.

He scored 39 points and beat his brother Bob by a single point.

Bob didn’t even get the runners up spot though as Jordan Hills matched his score but beat him on the back six holes to be the filling in the Smith sandwich.
