THE annual match between the Enmore Ladies and men for the Kinnersley Trophy always brings very keenly contested singles match play.

Russell Williams won the Division One medal and the Lombard trophy with a nett 61.

In second was Andrew Merrick on nett 66, and Neil Whisler took third with nett 68.

On yet another sweltering day, Enmore seniors travelled to the Teignmouth club set high above the town with spectacular views over Torbay.

With gorse bushes replacing the usual grass rough of the Enmore course, Teignmouth has always been a challenge for away visitors and so it proved with the home team romping in with a resounding 7-1 win.

Enmore’s single point was won by Keith Calvert with Mike Sullivan with a 3 & 2 victory.

The day after the Teignmouth debacle, quite a different squad were used for the home match against the local rivals from Taunton & Pickeridge.

With the course looking good despite the lack of rain, not one of the seven Enmore pairings registered a loss; a welcome “pick-me -up” for captain Graham Pain as his team came in with a resounding 6-1 victory.

Enmore’s pairings were Peter Farnell with Chris Topps (6 & 4), Graham Pain with John Newell and the 80+ years each pair of Ken Hunt with Phil Wood (both by 3 & 2), Ray Lukeski with Doug Read and Mike Sullivan with David Brown (both 1 up).

Peter Robinson with Dave Comley and Martin Watson with Roger Anniss both gained useful half points.

Meanwhile, after years of trying, John Newell won the bottle of wine for the nearest the pin prize!

IAN Rogers and Lyn Bird won their respective Captains Cups, contested during the annual Captain’s Day on Saturday.

The duo had a couple of superb rounds, with Rogers notching a nett 64 to win Division 3 and post the best overall score in the men’s competition.

Bird was equally impressive as she won the Lady Captain’s Cup, with a nett 65 to claim the silverware.

The runner-up to Rogers was captain-elect Trevor Pitt, who was also the Division 2 winner with his nett 66.

Gail Mason took second spot in the ladies’ event with a nett 72.

The final divisional winner was Barry Fellows, who matched his handicap to take top spot in Division 1.

Leighton Jenkins was next in line in the top flight on 70, while Mel Brown and Paul Bacon both returned nett 67s to secure second position in the second and third flights, respectively.

Captain Mike Carter also held various other challenges during the day, which were rewarded at the presentation in the evening, when he thanked everyone for supporting the day.

He also thanked his ladies captain Sue Wright and seniors captain Chris Stephens for their help in raising a sizeable amount for the captain’s charity.

The annual Seniors and Ladies Opens were contested last Thursday.

Local players dominated the leaderboards, as their knowledge of the firm, fast running course paid dividends.

Heading the scorecharts in the Seniors event was David Morris, with a massive 47 points, and he collected the Bill Martin Trophy as his reward.

He won by one from Roger Phillips, who was awarded the Veterans Trophy, with George Stratford another stroke back in third.

Captain-elect Trevor Pitt was next best, on 44 points, ahead of David Benjafield on 43.

Forty-two points was only good enough for a share of sixth, but with each player only able to win one prize that score found two more winners on the day.

Brian Read’s 42 points collected him the Nicoll Trophy for leading 65-69-year-old score, while former member Alan Marshall returned to his old club to take the Leading Visitor prize back to Tall Pines.

Two more Brean members, Kevin White and Bob Smith, also handed in 42 points and collected prizes.

In the ladies event, home players filled the first four slots, with Linda Edmondson being the winner – a solid round of 38 points giving her a one-stroke success over Lesley Millard.

Millard in turn had a two-stroke cushion over Lyn Bird, who had the better back nine score to relegate Carole Short into fourth place.

The leading visitor was Sue Harrop from Wheathill, on 34 points.

In what was possibly the busiest week of the year at the club, Tuesday afternoon saw the Brean Seniors entertain their Fosseway counterparts.

The home side were dominant and ended the day unbeaten, with the visiting team only securing a solitary half ahead of the second leg later in the year.

With Fosseway always being a tricky place to visit, captain Chris Stephens was delighted with his side’s 5.5-0.5 win, with his team of the day being Ray Byatt and Bill Marlow.

The Ladies July Stableford produced some superb scoring in the sunshine.

Leading the way was captain-elect Lyn Bird, who handed in a stunning card of 45 points to continue her superb run of form.

She only won by three points, though, as Bev Cranley was also in good form, returning 42 points.

A countback was needed for third place, as both Shirley Marlow and Gail Mason tied on 38 points, with Marlow getting the nod on the back nine.

Both Avalon League teams had home games on Sunday morning and both performed brilliantly to win their matches 4-1.

Matt Shaw led the Division 3 side to a comfortable victory against Worlebury to maintain their challenge at the top, while Dave Morgan guided his Division 5 troops to a similar victory over Long Sutton.
