Specsavers County Championship - Day 1
Somerset 307-7 v Nottinghamshire

MATT Renshaw's third County Championship ton in eight innings for Somerset, plus half-centuries from Tom Abell and Steve Davies, took the hosts into a good position against table-topping Nottinghamshire.

They ended the opening day on 307-7 at the Cooper Associates County Ground, to put three batting points on the board.

Captain Abell returned to the Somerset side after injury, as did Josh Davey, with spinners Dom Bess and Roelof van der Merwe both included in the team.

This looks set to be Australian Renshaw's final home appearance for Somerset, and showed why he will be much missed with 106 off 171 balls, which included 12 fours and two 6s.

After some testing opening overs, he and Eddie Byrom took the score to 62, at which point Byrom was lbw for 14, Steve Mullaney with the wicket.

Renshaw and George Bartlett reached lunch at 80-1, but then Notts' off-spinner Matthew Carter claimed his first victim of the day, having Bartlett (29) caught by Ross Taylor.

James Hildreth's stay at the crease was a surprisingly short one, gone for just a single run as he edged Carter to Taylor.

Renshaw, now supported by Abell, reached three figures but was then bowled by Carter, leaving Somerset on 176-4.

Abell and Davies took Somerset to 211-4 at tea, after which the skipper brought up his 50 off 117 balls, only to depart for 57, caught at slip off Luke Fletcher.

Lewis Gregory was then bowled by Carter (4-81 off 27 overs), falling for 16, and Van der Merwe was bowled by a duck by Matt Milnes.

But from 289-7, Davies and Bess reached the close of play with no further loss, Davies securing a half-century off 107 balls - he ended the day unbeaten on 59, and Bess 7no.
