TOM Banton struck his second century in as many days as Somerset 2nd XI piled on the runs against Kent.

Having struck 106 in a 2nd XI Trophy one-day match yesterday (Monday), which Somerset won by 107 runs, Banton returned to the wicket to open the batting on the first day of a three-day match and carnage ensued.

The 19-year-old scored 248 from 236 balls, including 35 fours and three sixes, while George Bartlett made a century of his own as Somerset passed 400 on day one.

Ben Green opened the batting with Banton and made 26, while Bartlett was eventually dismissed for 113 (158 balls, 12x4, 1,6) and Roelof van der Merwe made eight.

Peter Trego - captaining the side - is currently at the wicket alongside Fin Trenouth; click here for a live scorecard.

With Eddie Byrom suffering a suspected dislocated shoulder in the field during the final day of the win over Worcestershire, Banton has advanced his claims should a first-team opening arise for the County Championship match against Yorkshire, which begins in Taunton on Friday.

Someone who won't be lining up this weekend is Jamie Overton, who suffered a side strain while bowling for the 2nd XI last week and is set for a spell on the sidelines.

Overton, who altered his action over the winter and worked with the ECB Pace Programme, has not featured for Somerset since the Royal London One-Day Cup quarter-final defeat at home to Nottinghamshire in June last year.
