North Petherton 38, Clevedon 19

NORTH Petherton produced the latest in a series of fine comebacks to take the spoils against Clevedon.

Three tries in the final 15 minutes saw the hosts turn a 19-17 deficit into a comfortable victory against their youthful visitors.

Clevedon were 12-7 up at the break, with captain Dom Griffin going over for Pethy, but Mike Stevens put the hosts ahead when a ball bounced kindly and he went over.

The visitors were awarded a penalty try, but late scores from Eryk Luczka, Griffin and Jack Coles ensured Pethy picked up the bonus point win.

This coming Saturday, Pethy face a stern test at second-placed Drybrook.

MORGANIANS, on the back of a home win against Bath Old Edwardians the previous week, were looking to record another bonus-point victory against the division’s bottom club.

The visitors started well but good opportunities were wasted until an excellent break on the right saw Gavin Hancock and Dave Harris combine, before Hancock touched down under the posts. Jordan Mein converted.

Morgs were enjoying the bulk of possession but Wyvern did level the scores with 15 minutes gone.

The visitors regrouped well, however, and some strong running from Lewis Wood and Josh Cooper took them deep into Wyvern territory.

When the home team’s fly-half infringed at the breakdown, visiting skipper Olly McGeown took a quick tap and darted over the line for a converted score.

A penalty kick and a drop goal for Wyvern reduced the arrears, but after great work from Matty Winter on the wing, Cooper went through for an excellent converted score, which made it 21-13 to Morgs at the break.

The away side continued to dominate in the second period, and Will Hopkins went through for his 101st try for the club before Martyn Keep raced up the wing to extend the lead.

With the Wyvern full-back in the sin bin, Hopkins added his second and Jack Criddle dotted down for the final score of the game, after a good hands from Sam Bullion and Harry Gutteridge.

Mein added the extras to record six conversions from seven attempts.

The victory takes Morgs up to fifth in the table, two points behind third-placed Chew Valley.

Next week, they travel to unbeaten Bristol Barbarians for their last game of 2017.
