Middlezoy Rovers Ladies 2, Yeovil Town Ladies Intermediate 1

MIDDLEZOY Rovers Ladies maintained their 100 per cent start to the league season with a professional, battling performance against Yeovil.

With players missing Zoy had to reshuffle the pack, but they made a solid start to the game as Sarah Carling breezed past the Yeovil full-back to fire a low shot down to the keeper's left.

Yeovil had plenty of possession but were kept at bay by a disciplined Zoy defence, until midway through the first half, when the visitors took the lead.

After some sustained pressure, Yeovil worked the ball down the left where a driven cross found the oncoming Hattie King, who calmly slotted home.

The goal sprung Zoy into life, as Carling and Anusia Rourke tried their luck from distance only to see their shots well saved, though the hosts had their own keeper Faye Edwards to thank minutes later, as she saved two shots in succession.

As the half drew to a close a Zoy counter-attack saw Rosie Williams pick out Rourke on a driving run, and Rourke drove a half-volley over the head of the stranded keeper from 35 yards out for a goal of the season contender.

The second half saw more of the same, with Yeovil dominating possession but rarely putting Zoy under any danger.

A flurry of free-kicks and breaks in play saw the half fragmented with little flow.

But with ten minutes to go, Zoy took the lead; with the move of the game Williams arced a pass around the final defender to release Rourke, who rounded the keeper and drove home.

With their tails up Zoy defended gallantly, with players putting themselves on the line to help block and preserve their lead.

It was a hugely pleasing performance from Middlezoy, and next up for them is a trip to Buckland Athletic on this Sunday (September 24).
