MISSING playing football, or simply fancy giving a new sport a go?

Why not try out walking football, which has become a hit in Bridgwater as part of the Active Communities project.

The initiative aims to develop activities within specified areas to encourage and support people within those communities to become more active and to utilise the facilities in their area.

Several local groups are involved in driving the scheme, including the Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership, East Bridgwater together team, Sedgemoor District Council, Zing Somerset and Redgate Medical Centre.

Bridgwater Mercury:

ACTION: Walking football in Bridgwater.

The weekly sessions, which include a coach who runs drills and games, take place between 11.15am and 12.15pm on Wednesdays, followed by a social tea/coffee at Sydenham Community Centre.

Having started with four players, there are now 22 registered to play.

Walking football is for players of all abilities and for any age - the oldest currently playing is 80 - and while some people may have played before, for others it’s their first time.

Jane, a regular, said: "I absolutely love it! There are good coaching and warm up sessions.

"I’ve learnt new skills and enjoy the physical exercise and social fun."
