SOMERSET County Cricket Club have given their full support to the ECB’s All Stars Cricket initiative, a new scheme that aims to encourage children to take up the sport.

Described as the most significant development to impact on junior cricket in this generation, the project is set to aid the future growth of cricket in both the recreational and the professional game.

The nationwide programme is designed to inspire five to eight-year-olds to start playing cricket and provide a great first experience of the game.

There are a variety of benefits to signing up for the scheme, including free volunteer training, access to the All Stars Cricket support centre and a free kit bag with specialist equipment.

Former England opener Marcus Trescothick has lent his support to the scheme.

“It is really important that young people get the chance to experience the game in a fun and exciting way," he said.

"I would encourage as many clubs as possible to sign up before the deadline on February 28th.”

Chief Executive Guy Lavender added: “Encouraging young people to get involved in the sport is absolutely crucial.

“We will be working with Somerset Cricket Board to help ensure that local young people have a positive experience which will hopefully develop in to a lifelong love of the game.”
