South West 1W
Weston-super-Mare 50, Bridgwater & Albion 7

BRIDGWATER & Albion travelled up the M5 to face unbeaten Weston-super-Mare where, although they played well and stuck to their task throughout, they were beaten by a better side.

Fielding a side that showed several changes from their game at Midsomer Norton last week, the Albion were under pressure from the start, and after five minutes the hosts took the lead when Hayden Tuttiett went over for a try following a scrum, James Mackay adding the extras.

Weston extended their lead on 15 minutes when, following a flowing move that involved Mackay and Glenn Dickson, winger Huw Morgan scored a try which Mackay converted.

Five minutes later Weston full-back Harry Jones crossed for his side's third, which remained unconverted to make the score 19-0.

Shortly afterwards Roger Drabble, who was playing against his former club, made a fine break before passing to Kyran Devitt, but the Weston defence held firm to deny the Albion a deserved score.

Weston countered well and once again Tuttiett sent Matt Watkins on a run, but the visitors' defence coped well and the danger was cleared.

Bridgwater had James McLauchlan sent to the sin bin, but the visitors remained calm and coped well despite being a man down.

In the dying minutes of the first half Tuttiett released Chris Young, who charged up the wing before scoring a try that Mackay converted to make the score 26-0 at the break.

Albion made a spirited start to the second half, but were unable to prevent Weston further extending their lead on 48 minutes, as Morgan went over for his second try, again converted by Mackay.

When James Collings limped off injured not long afterwards Albion had to reshuffle further, but despite this Drabble opened the visitors' account in the 55th minute with a try that Kyran Devitt converted.

Shortly after the restart Dan Kemmish was yellow carded for a high tackle.

Weston again countered well and following a catch and drive Bird, making his 250th first team appearance, touched down for a try, Mackay improving it for 40-7.

Albion were reduced to 13 men when Shaun Mahoney was sent to the bin, which resulted in uncontested scrums, but despite their reduced numbers the Albion stayed on the attack.

However it was Weston who emphasised their unbeaten status when Will Young scored an unconverted try.

And the hosts rounded off the scoring when Morgan went over for his third try, also unconverted, to make the final score 50-7.

Somerton 7, Morganians 50

MORGS travelled to Somerton hoping to give their supporters an early Christmas present on Saturday.

Knowing any win at Somerton is hard earned, they came flying out of the blocks and were quickly in the ascendency when wing Matt Winter was denied in the corner by a high tackle and the referee gave a penalty try, converted by Hopkins.

From the kick-off, Morgs were on the attack again, and strong running from the forwards and quick ball created space out wide, where Rossiter and Winter were creating havoc. The second try came through a strong run from Hopkins, barging through for 12-0.

The third try followed more strong forward play, a clever inside ball from Olly McGeown sending Stef Pierce clear to run in a converted try from 20 metres.

Hopkins’ fine kick then put Winter through to score in the corner for 24-0.

The fifth try came from James Carter, who exploited Hopkins’ change of direction to run in from 15 metres for 31-0 at half time.

Somerton hit back after the break with a penalty try, but despite Cameron Modley’s sin-binning Morgs found their second wind as Hopkins ran through to score and convert.

Shortly after they powered their way back into the Somerton 22 and some impressive phase play saw Pierce go over for his second.

Then, with the last play of the game, Sam Bullion ghosted over and converted his own try for 50-7.

This was Morgs’ 12th consecutive bonus point win and sees them 18 points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.
