ALEX Barrow will be leaving Somerset at the end of the season when his contract expires.

The 24-year-old former King's College student made his way through the Somerset Academy and represented England at Under-19 level.

Barrow, who hails from Frome, joined the club as a batsman before developing into a more than competent wicket-keeper.

He made his First Class debut for Somerset in 2011 at Hampshire and went on to make 40 appearances, scoring 1201 runs and taking 71 catches.

He also featured in 26 List A matches and one T20.

Somerset director of cricket Matt Maynard said: “Alex’s contract expires at the end of the season and, after a number of discussions with him, we have agreed that it won’t be renewed.

"On behalf of everyone involved with the club I would like to thank Alex for all the effort and professionalism that he has shown throughout his time on the playing staff."

Barrow said: "I have been very lucky to have played with some fantastic players and to have played with some great friends.

"It's been a pleasure to play with all of my team mates over the last few years and I wish them all every success going forward.

"As well as Jason Kerr and Paul Tweddle, I must also thank Greg Kennis for his time during my time on the academy; Andy Hurry during his time in charge plus Phil Lewis, Dennis Breakwell and Andy Jones for their support during my four years at King's College.

"Darren Veness has had a big role in my development here and has seen me through four operations and has gone through each rehab period with me along with Ian Brewer and Jamie Thorpe."

He added: "I wouldn't have been able to follow this dream without the continued support from my family and friends and I am extremely grateful for everything they have done for me over the last six seasons and all the years before that."
