SOMERSET hit the road to Lord’s again on Sunday when they resume their bid for glory in the 50-over Royal London One Day Cup Competition when they host Glamorgan at Taunton starting at 11am, writes Richard Walsh.

At the halfway point of the group stages, Somerset find themselves in third place, behind Essex and Glamorgan, with five points from four matches played . . . so they are in a good position to qualify for the last eight.

Following their game on Sunday, they then host Middlesex on Tuesday and Sussex next Saturday - so this is a key week for Matt Maynard’s men.

Looking ahead to the next week, during which his team face Glamorgan, Middlesex and Sussex at home, Matt Maynard said: “This is a massive week for us coming up but we have played some good cricket in the 50-over competition from the second half of last season and this year, too.

“We have still got a lot to play for in this competition and we will be going out there to do our very best, enjoy the occasion.

“If we can pick up two wins on the week then we will be assured of a quarter-final place and, if we pick up three, then it will a home quarter.

“That’s our target and what we will be looking to do and play some exciting cricket on the way.

“Signing Mahela Jayawardene to play in the 50-over cometition was a very positive move for us and, after not making it in the T20, we need to try to get to a quarter-final this year.

“He will strengthen our batting coming into the middle order alongside Hildy in the longer format.”
