Wembdon 183-8 beat Bridgwater 2nd XI 180 by two wickets

AUSTRALIAN batsman Joshua Marrs scored an unbeaten 85 to help Wembdon to a two-wicket victory over Bridgwater 2nd XI on the opening day of the WEPL Somerset division season.

Marrs saw his side home with more than 12 overs to spare, finishing the game with two consecutive sixes off the bowling of Ian Higgins.

Wembdon won the toss and elected to bowl and Bridgwater reached 33-3 off nine overs, before putting together their first notable partnership of the day between Hill and Vickery.

Bingham got the required breakthrough in the 20th over and that was followed up by a middle-order collapse as Wembdon introduced the spin of Tilley (1-22), D Watts (1-20) and Lott (3-43).

Bridgwater, struggling on 145-9, found some lower order runs thanks to Ed Habberfield who top scored with 36, before Bingham returned to claim his second victim and end the Bridgwater innings in the 46th over.

In reply, Bridgwater quickly made inroads in the Wembdon batting lineup, with Higgins (3-31) and Scott Clapp (3-26) particularly impressive with the new ball.

Wembdon were reeling at 67-5 when Matt Habberfield (1-36) removed Bingham, but Wembdon overseas Josh Marrs (85no) batted superbly for his unbeaten half century.

Despite a late flurry of wickets, Marrs steered his side across the line in emphatic fashion.

Wembdon host Chard CC on Saturday (May 14, 1pm) and on Sunday host Timsbury (1pm) in the National Village Cup.

Bridgwater would like to thank match day sponsors Burnham Portable Toilet Hire.

They travel to Glastonbury 1st XI next Saturday.
