Somerset Division One West

Middlezoy Rovers 2 Congresbury

MIDDLEZOY Rovers became only the third team in the previous 14 seasons to finish a Somerset County League season unbeaten after their final game of the season ended in a two all draw at home to Congresbury.

In blistering conditions and with an expectant crowd, the hosts fell behind after a long ball forward from Kyle Havard was converted by forward man Joe Whittaker on 12 minutes.

Max Cushing levelled things on 21 following good work from man of the match Tom Brown down the left channel, as the hosts rather sluggishly found their feet.

Charlie Lintell then bagged his sixth of the season with a terrific right-footed finish across the keeper from the edge of the penalty area as Middlezoy ended the half in control.

After the break, Congresbury found an equaliser when the Zoy backline were again caught out by a long ball, this time Luke Penberthy the grateful recipient.

Middlezoy dominated the remainder of the game with the visitors camped inside their own half for long spells, but were unable to add a third.

Harrison Puplett found the net on 81, but his goal was ruled out by the visiting assistant.

After a successful ground grading inspection, Middlezoy Rovers will be playing Somerset County Premier division football next season.

Management duo John and David Warren gave their thoughts on the season - they said: "Today we have created a little bit of history - going through the season unbeaten has been a magnificent achievement.

"It's been an unbelievable journey from junior football, three promotions in five years. The players have been excellent all season long and believed in our philosophy.

"When we look at the games where we have dropped points and the circumstances, we could have been talking about maximum points this season, that's how good we have been.

"Next season will be a tougher test for the players, but they have nothing to fear on the back of this season and we are all looking forward to the challenge."
