SOMERSET director of cricket, Matt Maynard says he could freshen up his bowling attack for Sunday’s trip to Edgbaston in a bid to manage the workload of his young seamers.

Somerset head to Warwickshire still searching for their first win of the season, after this week’s Division One clash against Lancashire at Taunton ended as a third successive draw.

It’s a theme that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Maynard, who says the flat nature of the wickets – likely to be caused by the scrapping of the coin toss – is making it more difficult to force a result.

“There have only been two wins in Division One (so far) and there is not going to be so many this year,” he said.

“Yorkshire aren't going to win 11 to lift the championship because the wickets are better, so it’s going to be a lot more attritional.

“When you do get ahead in games you have got to capitalise.”

“We haven't been ahead as yet, we have chased all three games, so our next objective is to try and get ahead in the game and we will be trying to do that up at Edgbaston.”

The director of cricket also hinted at changes to the squad for Edgbaston, with Lewis Gregory expected to return, alongside one of Jim Allenby or Johann Myburgh.

Maynard said: “There will probably be a couple of changes to the team.

“Since his return to the team, Craig Overton has had a big workload which is something we will look at.

“We have been really impressed by the way that Jamie (Overton) has bowled in this game for us, and of course Lewis Gregory was terrific for us early season, but needed to rest this game so he will be playing there.

“We will have to look at the wicket to see if it is a two spin option or whether we utilise one of the other all-rounders with Allenby or Myburgh in the squad.”
