THE schedule for last week’s fixtures in the Taunton and District Saturday League was hit by bad weather, leading to half the games being postponed, writes Matt Whelan.

Match of the day was Creech Cougars and Woolavington’s clash at Creech in Division 3 . . . and the hype didn’t disappoint, as ten goals were shared evenly in a 5-5 draw.

Both teams had taken maximum points from their opening six games as goals from Josh Corkett, who hit a hat-trick, Sam Godfrey and Liam Neal with one each was enough to gain a point for Woolavington, to sit them top of the table on goal difference.

Simon Wough matched Josh Corkett for goals, capping a fine display with a hat trick, Nick Flynn and Adam Barter also getting on the scoresheet for Cougars.

In the only surviving Division 1 tie, Bridgwater Sports performed magnificently to defeat Middlezoy Rovers Reserves 6-0 on home turf.

Joe Clarke hit two goals, with one each from Andrew Skidmore, Matthew Fursland, Dean Organ and Callum James.

Middlezoy had won their first four games of the season before this tumble, whereas Sports have now won four out of four, leapfrogging their opponents to take second place.

The top four teams are only separated on goal difference, all being locked on 12 points.

In Division 2, Morganians moved into second position with a tight 1-0 victory at Westonzoyland. Harry Hamblin struck the only goal to close the gap on leaders Sydenham Rangers to two points.

Tone Youth Reserves kept their 100% record this season intact after coming from behind to win at Wembdon 4-3.

Tone’s rustiness after playing their first match in six weeks showed, trailing at the interval 2-0.

Steve Scorse and Matt Blight pulled the scores level to 2-2.

Both teams found it difficult to play flowing football on a sodden pitch but Tone put themselves ahead for this first time through a great header from Steve Reed.

Wembdon capitalised on a defensive error to make it 3-3, however Steve Scorse stole the plaudits with his second of the game, which sealed a 4-3 win for Tone.

Stogursey claimed their second point of the season but still remain winless after an entertaining 3-3 draw at home to Watchet Town Reserves.

IN Division Five of the Taunton Saturday League, Bridgwater Sports Colts hammered opponents Nether Stowey 7-0 to leapfrog Boca Seniors - whose match was postponed - into first place.

Ed Howes notched a hattrick, Matt Parker struck two as Lee Blewitt and Gaza Howes rounded off the scoring for Sports Colts.

Morganians Reserves triumphed in the battle at the bottom, a 4-2 win at home to Norton Fitzwarren Reserves was enough to secure their first win of the season and take them off the foot of the table.

Despite Lewis Coward impressing with two goals, Norton now go bottom of the standings.

The first round of the Rowbarton Charity Cup saw two ties played this week: the first saw Bishops Lydeard Colts of Division Four put up a brave fight against Staplegrove Reserves - but Staplegrove eventually ran out 4-2 winners.

Kane Squire and Jack Lewis found the consolation goals for Colts.

In the other clash Sydenham Rangers of Division Two travelled to Tone Youth of Division One, as Sydenham booked their place in the next round with an accomplished 4-0 win.

There was an all Division Four match up in the second round of the Seward Cup, where Bridgwater Grasshoppers more than cemented their place in the quarterfinals with a 12-2 thrashing of Porlock Reserves.
