SYDENHAM Gems travelled to Yeovil to take on Newton on Saturday and came away with an impressive 48-45 win.

The first quarter was steady with each side scoring goal for goal and remaining in possession of the ball, as ended 12-12.

Determined to bring new energy to the game, the Gems attack went out strong with Kelly Thorne (C) and Mikki Hole (WA) linking well with player’s player, Hannah Clapp (GA) and Justine Pearne (GS), to get around the Newton defence and take a two goal lead - 24-22 at half-time.

For the third quarter, umpire’s player Kerry Fellows moved to GD and Rheanne Lee to GK to help maintain the lead, 37-33.

In the final quarter, Newton equalised – but Gems remained careful and secured a narrow win.

Rubies lost out 43-24 to Henford, who took the lead from the off.

The second quarter proved more difficult for Rubies, despite the efforts of our consistent defenders.

By half-time they were well behind and never recovered.

Emeralds suffered a heavy 62-20 defeat to Reckleford after making a slow start.

Reckleford took advantage of this and quickly took the lead, leaving Emeralds 22-4 down.

Against an experienced team, Emeralds found it challenging to keep up with the fast paced game.

They finished the second quarter 32-9 down and the third 45-15 down, before eventually losing by 42.

Emeralds put up a strong fight and with everyone giving it 100% effort.
