Shapwick & Polden 1st XI 170-9 lost to Potterne 1st XI 171-2 by 8 wkts

SHAPWICK’s poor form continued on Saturday when they lost to Potterne by eight wickets.

Batting first, Shapwick lost the early vital wicket of Steve Tinnion with just four on the board.

Steve Coppell came to the wicket and looked in good form before he was out lbw for 20 with the score on 40.

This precipitated a collapse with both Nayan Karmarkar (7) and Lee Edmunds (0) falling without a run being added.

Ben Ackland, in at number four, mounted the revival as he and Sam Spencer took the score on to 85 before Spencer fell to Ben Mason for 13.

Wayne Spencer was soon to depart and Steve Spencer followed for 18 with the score on120-7.

Next to go was Paul Lang for a duck then the vital wicket of Ben Ackland was taken by Sahan Wijerathne for a battling 42.

No 10 James Haggett hit a defiant, unbeaten 36, including one 4 and three 6s and, with Michael Higgs, took the score on to 170-9 before the overs ran out.

Potterne’s bowlers shared the wickets with Dylan Higgins taking 3-25 off 10 overs and Mason and Edward Young two apiece.

The visitors’ openers, Thomas Cullen and Luke de Souza, made steady progress as Shapwick’s bowlers toiled away.

They put on an opening stand of 163 before Cullen was caught by Paul Lang off the bowling of Sam Spencer for a classy 85 which included 11 4s.

Two runs later and de Souza was run out by Ben Ackland for 59 but Wijerathne and Young saw their side across the line in the 46th over.

Shapwick’s bowlers kept the runs tight but failed to make the early breakthrough required with an inadequate total to bowl at and their side slipped to their ninth defeat out of 10 and remain bottom of the table
