SQUASH players from across the south of England gathered in Bridgwater at the weekend as Sydenham Junior Squash hosted the Summerfield Junior Open on the four recently refurbished squash courts at Bridgwater College Academy Sports Centre.

Featuring players aged from 8–18, the tournament supported by Summerfield Developments Limited, is the first England Squash and Racketball ranking event to be held in the town.

Two days of fast and furious action was rounded off by a series of exciting finals, the first of which saw Exeter’s Ioan Sharpe resist the challenge of Billy Whalley to win the U11 title.

There was local success in the Boys U13 event with Matt Davey (Street) edging out Taunton’s Harrison Barrett 6/11, 11/9, 11/8, 11/5.

The U15 Girls final saw an epic see-saw match with Bekki Heaslewood (Taunton) taking the opening game only for Ruby Jarman (Exeter) to win two in a row to take the lead.

Heaslewood powered through the fourth to send the match into the deciding game.

Despite Heaslewood saving two match balls to send the match into a tie-break, it was Jarman who eventually triumphed 12-10.
