SOMERSET TWO SOUTH

Wiveliscombe 20, Morganians 33

MORGANIANS ran in five tries to secure a comfortable victory on Saturday and keep their hopes of a second place finish alive.

Morgs had first use of the famous Wivvy slope and knew early tries would be key to victory.

Will Hopkins was first to cross, bursting through on the left, and Jordan Mein converted to make it 7-0.

A good use of kicking and running saw Ryan Rossiter break clear down the right and offload to Jake Collard in the corner, who dived over from a yard. The conversion was missed to make the score 12-0.

Morgs were fielding the kick-off well, handing to Royston Grimstead who was gaining good ground.

Before long Morgs were back in the Wivvy half and another break put Matty Lewis clear down the right. He ran in to score under the posts and Mein converted to make it 19-0.

The fourth try would unlock the bonus point and Morgs’ forwards peppered the Wivvy line until Andrew Saunders was held up under the posts.

From the scrum, Morgs drove over the line but James Carter knocked on.

Wivvy then had a scrum on their own five-metre line but again were driven back and Mein pounced on a loose ball to score under the posts before converting for 26-0.

Morgs, through a number of penalties, were put under a bit of pressure before a break through the centre saw Mein race clear for his second try. Mein converted for 33-0.

Wivey fought back after the break but it was not enough to stop Morgs taking the points.

After the match, head coach Shah Seehootoorah said: “The win is the key factor and the bonus point was crucial – what we need to understand is what changed at half-time.

“We lost our shape and could not retain the ball – it seems we had become intimidated by the slope and forgot the plan.

“For probably the first time this year our midfield tackling was poor and we allowed a team to go through us, and indiscipline allowed Wivvy to gain huge amounts of territory.

“That said, it’s a difficult place to come and win, so we’ll take the positives and look forward to a huge game with Hornets next week.”
