Somerset Division 1 W

St George E-in-G 0, Middlezoy Rovers 1

MIDDLEZOY ground out a hard-fought victory against fellow promotion contenders St George on Saturday.

On a terrible pitch, Middlezoy struggled to play their normal passing game, however, they still had great chances to take the lead, the best of which fell to Max Cushing who was beaten by a bobble when through one-on-one.

Dan Luce also had a great chance after good work down the left from Andy Smith, but his shot was blocked when well placed 12 yards out.

The big St George side were causing problems from set plays and Zoy keeper Greg Turner did well to tip a looping free-kick over his crossbar.

The second-half was much the same, with Middlezoy creating the better chances – Cushing again blazed over when well placed eight yards out, after a cut-back from Craig Wright.

The breakthrough finally came when Zoy broke quickly and Andy Smith ran down the right, before cutting the ball back to Dan Luce. His firsttime shot was well saved only for the ball to fall at the feet of Craig Wright who made no mistake with the rebound.

Middlezoy were never really troubled after this, with the back four marshalled well by captain Darren Cann – and it was Zoy who could easily of furthered their lead, had it not been for four goalline clearances.

Team: G Turner, Lintell, Cann, Clapp (L Turner), Jennings, Tucker, Luce, Whaites, Cushing, Smith, Wright.
