A ‘SERVICE of Celebration’ is being held at Bicknoller Church at 3pm on Sunday, October 19 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Somerset cricketing hero Harold Gimblett - arguably the county’s greatest ever batsman.

Gimblett, who was born in Bicknoller, made a century on his debut against Essex at Frome in 1935.

Between then and 1954 he went on to play in 329 matches, scoring more than 21,000 runs, including 49 centuries, at an average of 39.96.

The service will include contributions from Somerset club chaplain Rob Walrond and president Roy Kerslake - who will talk about Gimblett’s career at Somerset.

A representative of the West Somerset Cricket League will talk about local cricket today.

In addition there will also be some memorabilia relating to Gimblett on display which has been provided by the Somerset Cricket Museum.

Following the service there will be free refreshments at the Bicknoller Inn.

Rob Walrond is keen to hear from anybody who has any memories of Gimblett and he can be contacted on 07967-838499.
