Somerset Senior County Cup

Castle Cary 1, Bridgwater Town Reserves 2

BRIDGWATER Town Reserves put in a mixed performance on Saturday to beat Castle Cary 2-1 away and advance to the second round of the Somerset Senior County Cup.

Bridgwater made several changes to the team who drew 0-0 with Stockwood Green in the week with Kenzie Farnham, Lewis Hembery and Ben Cherry, 16, adding to the starting XI.

Bridgwater were fastest out the blocks with the midfield trio of Ben Cherry, Tyne Govier and Chris Young dominating the game with neat passing and clever positional interplay.

Their dominance told on the half-hour when Neil Peek’s accurate long pass allowed Chris Young to turn in the box and square to Tyne Govier, whose powerful strike hit home.

The second half saw Bridgwater allow Cary back into the game, drawing level after an hour when poor defending let their striker in and he finished well.

The last 20 minutes was end to end with both teams searching for the winner, but with few clear chances.

Bridgwater snatched victory in the final minutes when Young combined with Govier, who headed home.

Manager Luke Buckingham said: “I thought we played some of our best football of the season in the first half and moved the ball really well.

“Despite the poor second half we’ve extended our unbeaten run to five, but all the players know we’ll need to improve ahead of our home league game against Watchet on Saturday.”
