Somerset County Division One West

Glastonbury Town 3, Middlezoy Rovers 1

A DEPLETED Middlezoy side slipped to a second defeat of the season against table-toppers Glastonbury Town.

Middlezoy started the brighter, but were behind on 21 minutes when an excellent Tom Morgan free-kick found its way into the corner of the goal from 20 yards.

Glastonbury doubled their advantage four minutes later when Harry Jose saw a fine effort parried by goalkeeper Steve Baker, but Nick Mortimer was perfectly placed to score the rebound.

Jacob Bennett had the ball in the Glastonbury net after his initial strike hit the post, but he was flagged offside when tucking away the follow up and the goal was ruled out.

Middlezoy were forced into a change when they lost Damon Jennings to injury midway through the first half.

His replacement Craig Berry was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box minutes later.

Middlezoy protests were in vain and Mortimer converted the resulting penalty to leave ‘Zoy with a mountain to climb.

Berry’s unlucky afternoon then got worse as he was carried off with a thigh problem, forcing an already depleted squad into a second substitute inside the first 30 minutes.

The second half saw a much-improved showing from Middlezoy who passed the ball around well.

Andy Smith’s glancing header went inches wide and Aaron Whaites saw a fine shot brilliantly tipped over by Glastonbury keeper Joe Bowley.

Middlezoy gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Andy Smith reduced the arrears midway through the half from a Craig Wright pass - and a curling Tremlett effort from 30 yards drifted just inches wide as they continued to threaten the charmed Glastonbury goal.

‘Zoy committed extra numbers forward in search of a second goal and Glastonbury were denied a fourth goal in the final minutes on the break by the offside flag.
