BRIDGWATER College was struck by World Cup fever last week when it hosted two five-a-side tournaments to encourage students from all over the college to participate in sport.

The first tournament was aimed at Special Educational Needs (SEN) students, and three teams from Bridgwater College entered, together with two combined teams from South Gloucestershire and Stroud Colleges.

The Activators took on roles such as central timing, scoring, refereeing, media relations, pool managers and tournament managers.

All participants were handed a certificate to thank them for taking part, with the SGS team receiving silver medals for coming runners up and the Bridgwater College ‘Argentina’ team receiving gold medals and the ‘World Cup’ trophy.

Liam Twigger, 17, from Bridgwater said: “The tournament was a great laugh and we all enjoyed it very much. Everyone got involved and we will all definitely do it again.”

Ben Squires, 17, from Bridgwater and a Team BC Activator said: “It was an incredible experience to help organise such a big event for the College. I enjoyed it massively and feel that all the students involved did too. We organised it well which allowed the event to run smoothly.”

Ryan Bennett, 17, from Bridgwater and President of the Student Union said: “The SU is really proud to support the College World Cup event, promoting the enrichment and active lifestyles of our students.

“We are glad to see so many students engaging in College life outside of studies.”
