WEPL Premier One

Taunton St Andrews 264-6 (50 ovs) beat Bridgwater 215ao (46ovs) by 49 runs.

A POOR bowling display cost Bridgwater dear at The Wyvern on Saturday as they went down by 49 runs to Taunton St Andrews.

After winning the toss, the home side amassed 264-6 thanks to an unbroken 111-run stand between Rob Contreras (94no) and the hard hitting Dave Reading (64no), who both punished some indifferent bowling.

Cam Williams (2-37) was the most successful bowler, supported by Andy Roberts, whose first spell of six overs had produced a miserly 1-13. However, the last 15 overs saw no further wickets fall as all the bowlers toiled in the heat.

Bridgwater's reply was very positive as Andy Hallaran (27), Mitch Windsor (26) Chris Gange (31) Steve Davis (20) and top scorer Josh Vickery (43) all got in, then out, in the face of very defensive fields and unfortunate dismissals - as the pitch became more difficult to bat on.

Saints slower bowlers did the majority of the damage, with Luke Poole claiming 4-51. Bridgwater were dismissed for 215 with four overs to spare and left ruing the earlier inconsistent bowling performance.

Bridgwater will have to regroup in the face of two upcoming home games which will have a crucial say on how their season develops.

Next Saturday, Bridgwater host Weston in a crucial Premier One fixture, while the second X1 travel for the reverse fixture. The 'A' X1 host fierce rivals Bagborough at on the Park Road ground.
