Taunton and District Football League round-up - Sampford Blues win Rowbarton Cup
2:43pm Sunday 11th May 2014 in Sport
LOCOMOTIVES were unable to put the disappointment of being pipped to the Division One title aside, as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Sampford Blues in the final of the Rowbarton Cup.
The Blues, with the wind in their favour gradually began to build some attacking phases of their own, before Locos took the lead with a defected shot from the edge of the penalty area that beat the impressive Blues 16 year old keeper Luke Vernon on 20 minutes.
Locos were foiled by a Vernon save a few minutes later with the Blues now having to increase their activity both on and off the ball to take the game to Locos.
Central midfield duo Mitch Woodgate and Paul Pocock put in some sterling work to set the foundation as the Blues began to build momentum and ask questions of the opposition defence.
A Pocock through ball set Blues and league top goal scorer Luke Perry free in behind the defence, and he showed composure to place the ball past the oncoming keeper on 44 minutes.
With the adrenalin running high, the Blues regained the ball from the restart and fellow striker Craig Lawrence controlled the ball and released a shot with the outside of his foot on the edge of the penalty area that flew inside the top corner to send the Blues in at half time in the lead - one they would hold until the final whistle.
With the treble already won, Blagdon still had three league games to play to complete their season - the first of these was away to Nether Stowey who had secured Division Two football earlier in the week.
It was a 3-1 away win for the Hillbillies, Ben Hebditch scoring twice and Al Stephens once.
In Division Three, Alcombe Rovers thrashed Redgate 7-0 - Martin Green scored a pair, Daniel James, Jack Bodley, Andrew Land, Ash Morgan and Zac Brown all added one each.
Earlier in the week, Locos made hard work in their last game of the season to beat Bridgwater Sports 3-1.
Ryan Vickery, Joe Wilkinson and Sam Hyslop scored for Locos, who take second place in Division One.
At the other end of the table, North Petherton needed to beat Porlock to get themselves out of the bottom two - but went down 3-2.
Josh Gracie and Lewis Irish scored for Pethy.
In Division Two on Tuesday, Wembdon beat Minehead 3-0 thanks to goals from Dan Spencer, James Clarke and Tim Richards - and in Division Five, champions Ash Rangers recorded a 3-1 victory over Morganians Reserves.
Bridgwater Sports were confirmed as the third placed side before playing their last game of the season against Alcombe Rovers Reserves, and they rounded off the season with a 4-1 win - Jason Hitchcock, Paul Organ, Joe Daly and Scott Clapp all netting for Sports.
Nether Stowey got a 2-1 victory over Hamilton Athletic - and Stogursey beat Westonzoyland 4-1.
In Division Five, Wiveliscombe were already confirmed as runners-up so they just had to go through the motions against Bridgwater Wolves, which they did successfully with a 4v2 win.
