Taunton & District Saturday League
Bridgwater Sports 1, Locomotives 5

BRIDGWATER Sports Division One title hopes suffered a setback on Saturday as they were beaten 5-1 at home by fellow high-flyers Locomotives.

It was a disappointing afternoon for Sports, who had raced into a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Piers Govier penalty on 15 minutes.

Despite this, they went into the break trailing 3-1 as Locos surged into the game with three goals from set pieces.

From here on in it was all Locos, and two more goals after the break secured an emphatic comeback for the visitors.

Bridgwater Sports manager James Prowse was hugely disappointed with the result and thought Locomotives were deserved winners.

He said: “We started the game well and went into a 1-0 lead through a Piers Govier penalty after 15 minutes, but went into half-time 3-1 down after conceding three goals from three corners.

“We never got the ball down and played the football we can, and Locomotives scored two more goals in the second half.

“We were beaten by the best team on the day.

“We’ve only lost two league games all season and it was both times we have been The Big Match – it’s the curse of the Mercury!”

Govier’s penalty edged Sports ahead early on, but goals from Ed Frampton, Dean Quinn and Paul Stimpton quickly wiped out any advantage they had held.

James Weaver added a fourth shortly after the break and Ryan Vickery completed the scoring with his side’s fifth of the afternoon.

Locomotives manager, Steve Weaver, said: “Everbody battled and knew what they had to do in a top of the table clash - if we had played that way all season we’d have already won the league.”
