Somerset County League Division One

Middlezoy Rovers 2, Burnham United 1

MIDDLEZOY’S fourth game in a week ended in victory thanks to a last-minute winner from Steve Hall.

Hall was on hand to stroke home with the final kick of the game as Zoy came from behind to snatch the win in this local derby.

Playing against the wind, Zoy started the brighter, but fell behind on 17 minutes when a midfield mistake was punished by Burnham striker Matthew Scott, who raced through to slot home.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the lively Scott was taken off minutes later after a clash of heads with one of his own players.

Despite a strong wind, Zoy passed well and were unlucky to be behind at the break with Dan Luce and Andy Smith wasting great opportunities.

After the break and with the wind, Zoy continued to dominate, but were unable to find a breakthrough until the 73rd minute when captain Darren Cann latched on to a Craig Berry ball to rifle home the equaliser.

More glorious chances were wasted by the home side, who were a constant threat with Burnham unable to get out of their own half.

A long range effort from Steve Hall appeared to cross the line, but the referee was unable to award the goal, and Cann had another effort tipped over the bar from close range.

Despite terrific defending from the visitors, the winner came in the final seconds when Paul Atyeo was sent through on goal.

His effort rebounded off Elliot Lamb in the Burnham goal and into the path of Hall, who was on hand to stroke home the winner with the final kick of the game.
