Somerton 15, Morganians 34

ONE of the best displays by the Morganians team this season saw them overturn an improving Somerton side, in only their second game of 2014, to lift them to third in the table.

Somerton started the better of the two teams after the early exchanges with good breaks by their centres and full back.

This pressure was turned into three points after a succession of penalties, with the Somerton fly-half dispatching the kick.

Morgs upped their game after this point, breaking the line at ease while gaining ground and momentum.

They recorded their first points of the game when the fly-half put in a precise kick over into the far corner for Matt Winter to chase down and score under the posts. Will Hopkins converted.

Somerton did take the lead again after working the ball wide quickly and scoring in the corner, but a try by Ryan Rossiter, after another good kick by Fox and a smart pass by Matt Winter, left the outside centre with plenty of room to run in his first try of the game.

Hopkins again converting. The second half was all Morgs as their forwards stepped it up another gear driving Somerton back at every opportunity.

Royston Grimstead touched down to add another five points after a fantastic shove from a scrum 10 metres from the Somerton line.

Somerton did score a second try in the corner after being forced to move the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, then back again.

This was the only real pressure they applied all half as they were having the ball constantly turned over by Shayne Andrews and Nigel Smith and were being pinned back further and further by some excellent kicking from James Fox.

Morgs added the bonus point mid-way through the second half after the forwards carved out a great position - and a brilliant miss-pass from Stef Pierce found Ryan Rossiter in space, enabling him to score his second of the game.

Ben Winter added the final try when Will Hopkins picked out his run on the blind side of the ruck and he ran in unchallenged to cap off a brilliant performance.

Morganians play at home against Burnham-on-Sea next weekend with a 2.30pm kick off.
