Sydenham Garnets 6, Tor 36

GARNETS started off strong in their first quarter with a young team.

With a few players out of position, Garnets began to mould together as the game progressed.

Good attack made the game play look strong.

However, a few mistakes gave Tor the possession and they began to take the lead.

In the second half of the game, Garnets play improved massively, with many interceptions and tips from the defence.

With strong defence in the third quarter, Garnets came out fighting but solid defence from Tor prevented Garnets from getting the ball into the D.

In the last quarter, both attack and defence performed well but couldn’t gain the lead.

Credit to both teams for playing in difficult conditions on a slippery court.

Players and umpires vote went to Tilly Milburn (GD) which was well deserved.

Sapphires 46, Abbey 38

SAPPHIRES played Abbey from Tor – and made a strong start in the first quarter, taking a 14-10 lead with excellent feeding into the circle from Kelly Thorne and Katie Ball.

A relaxed Sapphires allowed Abbey to equal the score in the second quarter so, after a strong half-time talk, Sapphires began the third quarter with a new hunger, and great continuous interceptions from Beth Fella, and excellent defending from Carly Martin who kept the opposition's WA out of the game.

Jess Knott, filling in at GK, put the pressure on in the circle and turned over a lot of ball.

Sapphires finished the third quarter with a 38-26 lead.

A more effective final quarter with excellent team work from all, and accurate shooting and rebounds from Lynne Cornish and Paige Pople took Sapphires to a 46-38 win, with Beth Fella deserving the player-of-the-match vote.
