Somerset County League Division One

Middlezoy Rovers 3, Congresbury 2

MIDDLEZOY came out winners in the battle of last season’s promoted teams, as they edged Congresbury 3-2 on Saturday.

Despite dominating possession in the first half, Middlezoy were unable to create a clear shooting opportunity.

The visitors were awarded a penalty on 36 minutes when Ross Stockhall was taken down by goalkeeper Steve Baker - Baker was cautioned and the penalty dispatched by Seb Williams.

At half time the Middlezoy players were given the necessary reminders and started the second half with much more purpose.

First on 47 Jamie Temlett lofted the ball over the advancing keeper for the equaliser and then a minute later, Shaun Turner was on hand to tuck the ball in from close range.

Sam Peppin went close to adding a third only minutes later but was denied by Jason Small in the Congresbury goal.

On 54 Ross Stockhall's effort was cleared off the line by Darren Cann and at the other end Craig Wright's free kick went just wide.

Simon Bone then rattled the Congresbury bar with a shot before debutant John Doyle smashed home a third on 84 minutes for the home side.

Congresbury grabbed a second on 87 through the lively Ross Stockhall, but Middlezoy saw the last few minutes out well to secure maximum points.
