Somerset Senior Cup Quarter Final

Middlezoy Rovers 2-3 Portishead Town Reserves

MIDDLEZOY crashed out of the Somerset Senior Cup to their lower league opponents after a disappointing home display on Saturday.

In the opening exchanges, Middlezoy looked comfortable on the ball and were almost rewarded for their patience on 23 minutes when Steve Hall was played in down the right hand side.

His cross was prodded away for a corner with Craig Wright waiting in the box.

Simon Bone tried his luck from long distance with the keeper beaten, but his shot drifted wide.

Portishead got in behind the Middlezoy defence for the first time on 26 minutes, but solid defending by Lance Turner saw the visitors register their first corner.

On 40 minutes Middlezoy were denied a clear penalty when Steve Hall was taken out as he was about to shoot; the referee deciding Hall had ran into the defender.

The sides went in goalless at the break but Middlezoy opened the scoring within two minutes of the second half when Charlie Lintell's excellent cross was glanced in by Craig Wright.

The next ten minutes saw Middlezoy create a number of chances but they were unable to add to their lead, the best of them falling to Steve Hall who shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Middlezoy were made to pay for their lack of potency in front of goal and were twice undone by consecutive counter attacks by the visitors.

The first was well finished by Nick Walker on 61 and the second a minute later by Dean Jones.

Middlezoy suddenly found themselves a goal behind and went chasing the game, only to be picked off by a third goal on the break by Jake Sutton on 72.

Middlezoy defender Shaun Turner smashed home to narrow the deficit with just two minutes remaining and give the home side hope of forcing extra time.

Craig Wright had a golden chance to level it the final minute, but his control let him down when through on goal.

Middlezoy: Baker, Bone, Lintell, LTurner, ScTurner (ShTurner), Cann, Whaites (Williams), Luce, Singleton (Peters), Wright, Hall.
