Gems 53, Saturn 48

GEMS met saturn this sat in their first cup match and the first quarter started well with both teams working hard. Gems' centre court Helen Martin and Amy Witcombe linked well to feed the ball into the shooters.

Gems went on for the second quarter with a slight lead, but Saturn came on strong with Rachel Lawrence, Beth Fella, and Danni Keirle sticking tight and defending hard to prevent Saturn from decreasing their lead.

Into the second half of the game, shooters Hannah Clapp and Justine Pearn certainly got their eye in with some amazing shots.

Gems held their nerve to win the game 53 - 48.

Ambers 28, Priory 40

AMBERS started off strong against Priory with good quick passes down the centre court and finishing the play with good shooting by Steph Rioden and Michelle Parr.

At the end of the first quarter Ambers were winning 13-11.

Priory had upped their game and were quick on their toes to pull back the lead.

This was unexpected and priory had started to pull ahead in the second and third quarter.

The last quarter of the game, Ambers started to pull the score closer with good defending from Katy Dennison and fast play down the centre court from Hannah Wallis and Georgia Edmundson.

The player of the match went to Georgia Edmundson.

Emeralds 42, Spears 16

EMERALDS took the first quarter to settle into the game due to players filling in.

Jess Atkinson, playing out of position at GA, linked up well with Steph Riordan at GS - whose shooting was very accurate. The end of the first quarter was level.

Emeralds settled in the second quarter.

Kate Dennison and Rhianne Lee combined well in defence to put pressure on Spears' shooters and capitalise on their mistakes.

Spears were playing their own game and causing Emeralds to panic.

Emeralds extended their lead at the end of the quarter.

Georgia Edmundson replaced Atkinson at GA, and although out of position played very well linking with Kerry Clark (C) and Michelle Martin (WA).

Emeralds began to play their own game with great defending and brilliant shooting.

Clare Tottle at WD helped Emeralds maintain possesion.

Going into the final quarter, Emeralds were dominant and feeling confident of the win.

Great play by all the team to ensure they are through to the next round. Rheanne Lee was deservidly voted player of the match.

SYDENHAM U16's played two games in the Somerset Junior tournament at the Blue School in Wells.

The first game was against Wells B and Sydenham girls played strongly against good opponents.

Strong defending and accurate shooting enabled Sydenham to win the game 11-2.

The second game saw Sydenham up against Yeovil B.

Sydenham had to work hard between defence and attack, but never gave up.

The game ended a draw 7-7.

The Sydenham team was: Kim Parr, Katie Rowles, Hannah Wallis, Kirsty Richards, Melissa Ainsworth, Rheanne Lee and Megan Scott.

Sydenham Under 14's only had two matches this tournament however they went out with great enthusiasm. The first match against Yeovil started strong. With tight defending by Hannah Ainsworth, Yazmin Thomas and Kirsty Kilday, good passing by Paige Currie and Savannah Sulmina into the shooting circle, good movement between the shooters Jess Bull and Georgia Wilton enabled them to win their match 8 - 2.

In the second match against Taunton, Sydenham's defence came into their own. Yazmin Thomas linked well with Hannah Ainsworth in the defence and Kirsty Kilday with Paige Currie made some timely interceptions. Taunton came back at Sydenham and made them work hard for each goal but this time Sydenham kept up their spirits and apart from a few minor errors fought well as a team and were able to pull away and win 8-4.
