Weston Hornets 22, Morganians 17

MORGANIANS faced a tough test this weekend after taking on a stronger than average Hornets side.

Morgs, who came in to this game on the back of a defeat to table topping Cheddar, started the game with great intent and drive by the forwards.

Strong running by Stef Pearce and David Harris left a gap big enough for Will Hopkins to get through and score within the first 5 minutes. He followed up with the conversion. Morganians were in control all over the park, with their backs spreading the ball across the pitch effortlessly, pulling Hornets everywhere. The second try came midway through the first half after Dave Harris picked the ball up from the back of a scrum and ran down the blind side.

His off load found Will Hopkins who drew the next man and passed it wide to Sam Carter, who drew the final player and passed back inside to find Hopkins who scored his second of the game under the posts. Hornets clawed their way back into the game after a few refereeing decisions went against Morganians.

They managed to score two tries, both out wide to bring the score back to 14-10 to Morgs at half time. The second half saw the majority of the Hornets 10 substitutes come into the game - and little changed as the Morgs boys dug in deeper to try and grind out the result.

Nothing could be done after Hornets found an overlap out wide to twice out wide, this putting them in the lead. Hopkins closed the gap after converting the penalty, but it wasn't enough for Morgs even after a great performance. The team will try to get back to winning ways when they hosts Ivel Barbarians at home next weekend, with a 2.30pm kick off.
