Bridgwater Jupiter netball start with defeat

Bridgwater Jupiter 34, Abbey Meads 48
JUPITER started a new era for Bridgwater Netball Club on Sunday with their first ever representation in the Regional League.
They travelled to Swindon to play Abbey Meads and started strongly with every player giving 100% to ensure they stayed firmly in the game.
Sammie Woolacott (WA) made strong passes down the court and Jupiter were just 8-9 down after the first quarter.
During the second quarter, the Jupiter girls’ nerves for the unknown settled and this reflected in their game, displaying solid attacking and defending play.
GK Lisa Durant was outstanding and totally dominated the circle, minimising Abbey Meads ability to shoot helping Jupiter lead 22-15 at half time.
Unfortunately, Michelle Stone (WD) suffered an injury in the third quarter and, despite having a strong replacement, the change in line-up gave them a psychological barrier which resulted in a dip in court play and Jupiter trailed 26-32 going into the final quarter.
Four positional changes were made to try to strengthen the team and every player battled hard with captain Beckie Cowley (GD) making several interceptions trying to keep the team in the game.
However, despite a good performance and battle, Jupiter lost the game 34-48 but they demonstrated strong netball throughout and showed they deserve to be in this Regional League competing at this high level.
Jupiter’s player of the match was Lisa Durant.
The Jupiter team would like to thank all of the club members who travelled to Swindon to support them in this first game.
Neptune 49, Dolphins 24
NEPTUNE’s first game of the season was away against Dolphins. Neptune were hyped up and started the first quarter with some great movement in the attacking circle, producing some fine shooting by Katy Cheese (GA) and Lianne Fothergill (GS).
During the second quarter, Neptune continued to raise their game and displayed some outstanding netball. Continual marking and constant support by Annia Holleron (C) up the court, restricted the opposition to only five goals.
The third quarter saw some great defending by Hazel Hucker (WD) and Bex Dunn (GD) who rarely allowed the other team to score.
Neptune’s final quarter saw them work hard as a team which enabled them to extend their impressive lead.
Player of the match: Katy Cheese.
Venus 40, Abbey 43
VENUS’ second game of the season was at home to Abbey. In the first quarter it was a tightly fought game as it went goal for goal right up to the last minute and, despite brilliant defence by Saskia Middleton (GD,) Venus ended up trailing 15-13.
During the second quarter, some crucial interceptions by Hollie Cornish (WD) and Mary King (GK) meant Venus went into the lead but, due to Abbey swapping their defence, they managed to pull back and went in leading at half time 26-25.
Venus struggled to capitalise on some interceptions in the third, which meant Abbey pulled away to lead 29-35.
The final quarter saw Venus came out with great determination. Morgan Middleton (GD) took the court with Coleen Bartlett (GK) and they worked tirelessly to block shots from Abbey.
Venus capitalised on this and, with great movement through the court by Chris Durant (C) and accurate feeding into the circle by Dawn Fothergill (WA) to joint players of the match Kayl Haste (GS) and Rachael Selway (GA) who converted their shots, meant Venus pulled back but they left it too late.
