North Petherton 31 St Austell 22 WING Mike Stevens scored a hat trick as North Petherton beat St Austell 31-22 on the opening day of the South West 1 West season.
In a game that contained seven tries, Pethy crossed four times to secure a bonus point against their newly promoted opposition.
The home side started brightly and a strong break from Captain Sam Williams forced an attacking position, allowing right-winger Stevens to dart over from 25 metres out to score an opportunist try in the corner.
St Austell moved the ball around and made plenty of yards as they counter attacked with ease and put runners in to space.
The middle section of the first half belonged in midfield, with strong runs being met by equally strong tackling.
Pete Dickens typified the determination with an impressive work rate, well backed-up by Miles McNellie.
Petherton used the bench to good effect and within a couple of minutes had extended their lead thanks to two penalties from full back Harry Roberts to 11-0.
St Austell added a penalty just before the break, but a Tracey grubber kick was then well-gathered by Stevens to score his second of the afternoon. Beleski playing his first match showed his solid handling and distribution skills in orchestrating numerous plays around the park.
Another broken field play from Pethy put Stevens in for his third of the afternoon, before St Austell hit back with a try of their own.
Griffith crossed for the bonus point score with ten minutes remaining to all but seal the win, but St Austell hit back with two well-worked tries to give Pethy a late scare.
The hosts though, held on for the win to begin the league campaign with a bang.
