Men's Conference

Taunton Vale 2nds 2, Bridgwater Men 1sts 2

BRIDGWATER closed their season with an exciting 2-2 draw with Taunton Vale.

Bridgwater started the game brightly with chances for Tom Willis, Tom Lott and Liam Pigden.

But the home side took the lead, slightly against the run of play, with a well worked penalty corner routine.

Good work again from the Bridgwater wingers, Woolmington, Pigden and Willis led to several penalty corners, one of which was somehow squeezed home by Jenkins to level the scores midway through the second half.

It was the home side who retook the lead but with five minutes to go Bridgwater knew they had to score to make sure of their finishing position above Taunton Vale.

A quick break from a Vale penalty corner from Bridgwater led to the equaliser - passes from Woolmington and Pigden found Lott who took his one-on-one chance exquisitely.

Man of the match went to Pete Saunders. A club spokesman said: “Overall it was an up and down season, playing a better level of hockey this season saw us occupy the top six before Christmas, but a poor run after Christmas sees us finish eighth with 24 points.”

Central Division

Bridgwater Ladies 1sts 1, Mendip 0

THE Ladies started strongly and were rewarded with a goal from Lorraine Hollidge who followed up on a rebound from the goalkeeper.

On the couple of occasions Mendip broke through they were dealt with by the defensive back line of Donna Cooper, Laura Coles and Hayley Greenwell. Sue Durkin in the Bridgwater goal made several telling saves.

The latter part of the second half saw Mendip increase their determination to score but Bridgwater held firm and Donna Cooper made some brave tackles and interceptions before she was injured.

Sue Durkin was allowing nothing past her so Bridgwater rode out the storm and finished the game claiming all three points.

Joint player of the match went to Donna Cooper and Sue Durkin.

South East 1

Bridgwater Mens 2nds 1, Teign 1sts 3

THE game started slowly with the defence of Andy Cook, Duncan Morrish and Mike Morrish clearing their lines well.

Teign opened the scoring and shortly after doubled that lead after they caught Bridgwater on the counter for a second.

After a delayed start to the second half due to a hail storm, Teign made it 3-0 but there was a glimmer of hope for Bridgwater when Tim Bennett hit a perfect pass to Burland, who steadied himself before firing into the goal for 3-1.

Bridgwater couldn't pull the deficit back and finish the season in fourth place.

South East 2

Teign 2nds 2, Bridgwater Mens 3rds 2

TEIGN had the best of the opening encounters with Bridgwater indebted to keeper Luke Hendrie for keeping the score at 0-0.

Dan Batten opened the scoring for Bridgwater as he picked up the ball and stepped through the gears, easily passing the flat footed defence. He tried to slip the ball through to Steve Turvey, and the keeper stopped this ball, but the rebound fell nicely back to Batten who scored from a very narrow angle.

Teign equalised early in the second half but Bridgwater again took the lead through Batten. Teign had the final say though and equalised for a second time late in the match.

Man of the Match was Matt Hubbard.

South East 3

Bridgwater Mens 4ths 3, Asmoor 3rds 1

BRIDGWATER started strongly but a swift counter attack from Ashmoor's brought its reward as they took the lead after ten minutes. The home side started to control the game and drew level when Cam Birch reacted quickly to race through and beat the keeper with a low shot and they were ahead soon after when Steve Pigden turned in a Mike Davidge shot.

The second half saw Bridgwater's midfield of Billy Vickery and Ali Cook dominating the game and with ten minutes to go, a fine solo run from Birch brought Bridgwater's third goal to seal the victory, although there were still a few scary moments, ably dealt with by defenders Ian Stradling and Alan Baldwin, before Bridgwater were able to claim the victory and finish the season third in the league.

Isca 6ths 7, Bridgwater Mens 5ths 1

THE season ended on rather a sour note for the fifth team as they were undone by a strong ISCA side.

James Kettlewell, Ben Stone, Steve Morrish kept ISCA at bay with key tackles and interceptions early on.

That hard work was rewarded when Bridgwater took the lead as Will Baldwin got his first ever senior goal with a penalty corner strike.

ISCA got an equaliser just before half time but the second half saw an onslaught from the home side as Brad Palmer's goal was battered with six further goals.

Man of the match was Will Baldwin.
