Jupiter 44, Babylon 31

JUPITER continued their fine form with a superb win over Yeovil side Babylon.

They started strongly, ending the first quarter with a 10-6 lead.

Strong defence from Beckie Cowley, Imma Matcham and Sally Haysham meant that Babylon found it hard to get the ball into their shooters, enabling tips and turnovers to be made.

These were then brought down the court by Baylea Charles and Amy Shaw, converting the defence’s hard work into goals, giving Jupiter an 11 goal lead at half time.

Consistent shooting from Rosie Hill and Paige Davey let Jupiter pull further away to lead by 14, leaving Babylon too much work to do in the final quarter and giving Jupiter yet another win.

Saturn 50, Tomahawks 34

A much-needed win by Saturn was helped when they took a commanding lead in the second quarter against Tomahawks after the first quarter finished all square.

Great defending by Sally Haysham (GK) and Emma Downes (GD), along with great pressured defensive support from Michelle Stone (WD), meant Saturn led 25-18 at half time.

Excellent centre court play in the third quarter by Sammie Woolacott (WA) and timely interceptions from Emma Reynolds (C) ensured Saturn brought the ball fluently down the court to the shooters.

Accurate shooting by Becky Palmer (GA) and Rachael Selway (GS) helped Saturn extend their impressive lead.

The final quarter showed everybody putting in 100% and an overall great team performance ensured a vital win.

Somerset Division 1

Neptune 41, Swans 47

Neptune played a highly competitive game against Wells Swans.

During the first quarter there was accurate shooting from Katy Cheese (GS) and Rachael Selway (GA), as the period finished 13-13.

The strength of play continued into the second quarter with great defensive interceptions from Katie Chedzey (GD) and Morgan Middleton (GK). At half time the score was still tied at 24-24.

The third and fourth quarters saw brilliant centre court play from Michelle Stone (WD), Imogen Setter (C) and Lisa Phillips (WA).

However, Swans upped their play during the final phase to go on to win the game 47-41.

Somerset Division 2

Venus 52, Robins 26

Venus, playing at home, started the first quarter with great determination.

Strong defence from Saskia Middleton (GD) and (GK) Coleen Bartlett, aided by some fantastic interceptions from Annia Holleran (WD), placed Robins under immediate pressure and Venus ended the first quarter with a 15-5 lead.

Venus’s continued strong play in the second and third quarters, alongside accurate shooting from both Lianne Fothergill (GS) and Karis Holleran (GA), kept Robins trailing 19-38.

The final quarter witnessed some precise passing and energetic centre court play from both Chris Shaw (WA) and Dawn Fothergill (C), which enhanced Venus’ lead.

Somerset Division 2

Mars 47, Vipers 33

For the first two periods Mars played well, getting interceptions at the defensive end from Julie Mclean (GD), Gemma Codman (GK) and Bex Dunn (WD), and translating these into turnover goals.

Leading 23-14 at half time, the third quarter brought some scrappy and, at times, sloppy play by Mars, with balls being lost in the middle and goal third due to playing too quickly.

This allowed Vipers to pull back some of the deficit and the quarter ended 31-24.

In the final quarter Mars stepped up the play to bring the ball swiftly and effectively down the court.

This, coupled with good feeding from Cath Clark (C) and Elaine Bartlett (WA), meant the shooters, Kayleigh Haste (GS) and Sarah Perry (GA), could extend the lead with precise shooting.

Somerset Division 3

Mercury 19, Spears 16

Yet another new line up for Mercury saw them make a slow start against Spears who led 5-2.

In the second period, good defending from Alisha Gardener and Chloe Berry meant Mercury stayed in touch, as the score was kept low at 10–7.

A change in defence in the third quarter allowed Mercury to catch up and take the lead, 14–13.

Excellent shooting from Lily Rowland and Kayleigh Haste, and excellent interceptions in the last quarter from Chloe Trout, Jess Webb and Lucy Kyte, steered Mercury to a narrow victory.
