SYDENHAM Gems bounced back from defeat with a comprehensive 57-34 win over Tomahawks in the Somerset premier league.

Throughout the first and second quarter Gems were flowing well down the court, with both ends working hard.

Great centre court play from Katie Ball and Helen Martin ensured Gems turned over the Tomahawks centre pass on numerous occasions, and helped the team to a 34-16 lead at half time.

During the third quarter Gems’ defence started to gel and they extended their lead to 49-21. In the fourth quarter Tomahawks pulled back the deficit but Gems came out on top.

Player of the match was shared between Hannah Clapp and Kerry Hobbs.

Somerset Division 1

Sapphires 20, Claremont 33

SAPPHIRES were missing three regular players and Claremont started strongly and won the first quarter 12–7. During the second quarter, Sapphires applied good pressure and well timed interceptions from Beth Fella and Rachel Lawrence prevented Claremont from extending their lead further.

Good spacing and communication between Katie Ball and Laura Coombes helped to work the ball down the court, but Claremont defenders made it difficult to move the ball into the circle. Beth Fella was voted player of the match.

Somerset Division 2

Emeralds 45, Vipers 28

EMERALDS started with great team play between Leanne Wegg and Michelle Martin moving the ball well into Rox McDowell and Adele Ranford.

Both shooters were on form taking Emeralds to a 22–17 lead at half time.

Emeralds continued in strong and determined mood, and excellent defending from Rachael Coles and Emma-Jayne Brown standing in at goal defence.

Tips and interceptions from Alex Williams at WD helped to disrupt Vipers rhythm, and working strongly into the attacking end, Emeralds worked hard to the end. Excellent shooting from Adele Ranford earned her the player of the match vote.

Somerset Division 3

Ambers 23, Newbarn 32

AMBERS started the game strongly against Newbarn taking a slight lead, however despite this Newbarn took advantage and pulled away ending the first quarter 10-5.

The team came out fighting in the second and third quarters with good defence and attacking from Hannah Wallis and Georgia Edmundson and started to pull back at Newbarn's advantage and ended third quarter within five.

Despite Ambers best efforts from the defence and strong shooting from Tasmin and Michelle, Newbarn pulled ahead in the last quarter.

Somerset Division 3

Garnets 13, Spears 28

GARNETS faced a tough game against Spears from Paulton. In the first quarter, there was some great play in the centre court from Garnets mid-court led by Vicky Evans, with Steph Riordan and Emma-Jayne Brown, working the ball well into Garnets shooters Amber Lovell and Tanisha Birch.

The team swapped each quarter, and brought Steph and Nic Elkins on.

As each quarter progressed, the team gelled well and stepped their game up. Excellent defending from Lucie McDowell and Rheanne Lee helped with great interceptions, with the ball being moved into the attacking end.

The team played with great determination, but lost a well fought game . Player of the match was Rheanne Lee.
