Taunton and District Football League report
7:00am Friday 11th January 2013 in Sport
THE big game in Division 1 of the Taunton and District Saturday League was Bridgwater Sports hosting Locomotives with both teams still in with a shout on the title.
Sports must have thought they had the three points sewn up when they found themselves leading 3-0 at half time with goals from Andrew Skidmore, Paul Organ and Piers Govier.
But Locos levelled late on and then scored a winner in the 94th minute to leave Sports smarting in defeat.
Highbridge Town held leaders Staplegrove to 0-0 for 41 minutes but the table-toppers soon made it 3-0 in the second half before Richard Cattell grabbed a consolation late on.
SRL Allsaints had a 3-1 home win over Alcombe Rovers, Mark Pope scored for Saints the only goal of the first period, James Bawden scored from 25 yards to make it 2-0 from the re-start and he could have made it 3-0 five minutes later from the penalty spot but he missed the opportunity.
Leighton Ballentine did make it 3-0 before Lee Todd got one back for Rovers making the last five minutes interesting.
A brace from Chris Taylor and one from Wayne Hand couldn’t help Predators to victory as they lost 5-3 to Dulverton and North Petherton also lost in a 2-1 defeat over Bishops Lydeard with Lewis Irish getting the consolation.
With Division 2 leaders Middlezoy Rovers Reserves not playing and second placed Hamilton Hawks eight points behind but with two games in hand had a chance to close the gap by beating Westonzoyland, however they had other ideas holding their hosts to a 2-2 draw.
Will Parkman and Andy Lawton scored for Hawks with Jack Evett getting both Zoyland goals.
In turn, that gave Wembdon Saints in third the chance to move up to second with a win but they too were held to a 2-2 draw by Appletree with James O’Brien and Paul Goss scoring for Saints.
Despite a goal for Brad Hayes, Nether Stowey lost 5-1 to Porlock.
In Division 3, Bridgwater Sports Reserves lost out in a five-goal thriller to Merry Monk despite Gary Howes and Scott Clapp trying their best to pull the 3-2 scoreline back.
Minehead went on a scoring blitz putting eight past Sydenham Rangers conceding two in the process thanks to goals from Jake Adey and Nick Brown.
Wembdon was another team goals on the day, theirs was a 6-0 beating of Highbridge Town Reserves. Matt Kerton got a hat-trick, Ben Cheffey, Tim Richards and Jordan Moate all scored a goal apiece. Redgate beat Williton 6-2 on their own ground, Sam Anthony hit a hat- trick, Sam Granville got two and Charlie Arden one.
In Division 4, all the leading teams are looking over their shoulder at Rhode Lane Wanderers who have several games in hand and with a 7-1 win over Dulverton Town Reserves are quietly moving up the table. Ben Patrick and Sam Godfrey both scored twice, Matt Patrick, Lewis Baker and Dom Clarke all once each.
There was a tight game between the Gallery and Galmington Dragons as Jamie Evans scored the only goal to give The Gallery the points.
Dan Barnes scored the only goal of the game from a wide angle to give his side North Petherton Reserves a 1-0 win over Bridgwater Sports Colts.
Morganians picked up their second win of the season beating Alcombe Rovers Reserves 4-1 thanks to two goals from George Weston, one from Pawel Duda and a Chris Reed penalty.
In Division 5, Wembdon Saints Reserves lost 3-1 to Exmoor Rangers despite Jack Gardner’s opening goal.
Middlezoy Athletic beat Bridgwater Grasshoppers 4-2. Paul Hamblin, Kev Cornell and Ruben Lee made it 3-0 before Lee Theobold pulled two goals back for Grasshoppers. Ruben Lee sealed the win with his second and Middlezoy’s fourth of the match.
In the Rowbarton Charity Cup Round 2, Stogursey made hard work of beating Nether Stowey Reserves winning 2-1. Andy Rolland scored for Stowey with a cracking overhead kick.
