BRIDGWATER'S Liberal Democrats have this week unveiled the man they hope can win the battle to become the town's MP at the next General Election.

Theo Butt Philip (pictured) will spearhead the party's bid to wrestle the seat from Conservative incumbent Ian Liddell-Grainger, who is currently enjoying his second term as the town's House of Commons representative.

Theo, a Wells councillor, will succeed James Main, whose third place finish in the election last time around has seen him replaced.

The new man said: "There is a fantastic team of Liberal Democrat councillors and activists in Bridgwater and West Somerset, working hard for local people in the community.

Our next challenge is to elect a Lib Dem MP to work hard for local people at Westminster.

"I will be campaigning on the issues that matter to the people of Bridgwater and West Somerset, like fighting climate change, safeguarding the NHS, protecting the Post Office network and securing more affordable housing for Somerset residents.

"I look forward to proving that there is a credible alternative to the current MP in Bridgwater and West Somerset."

And Janice Beasley, chair of the area's Liberal Democrats, added: "We are now fortunate in having the services of a young, experienced and energetic campaigner who knows the constituency well and who can demonstrate that Liberal Democrat values offer the best way to secure a brighter future for the people of Bridgwater and West Somerset."
