Westonzoyland WI

“I’VE always wanted to sit the other side of the table”, said Sandra Browning, raising a laugh from the members as she chaired her first meeting as president, which went without a hitch.

Well, there were one or two of the usual little hiccups - but that always adds to the enjoyment of every meeting!

And another newcomer to the village came along to “test the water”.

The Westonzoyland Waddlers is a title the skittles team will have to change as they are now through to the next round of the County Skittles tournament.

Battle began at the George Inn, Middlezoy, against Ashcott, a team renowned for winning.

After Westonzoyland won the first hand, things went steadily downhill and at the last hand they were losing to Ashcott by 16 pins – a seemingly impossible task.

But there are no quitters in the Westonzoyland team. With a great deal of encouragement from both their fellow players and supporters they pulled out all the stops, and won the match, beating Ashcott by an amazing 13 pins.

“Christmas Traditions of Europe” was the subject of guest speaker Aileen Hase, who also brought along recipes to try at home and samples of traditional festive breads, which were enjoyed during the tea break.

The competition “What’s in my favourite sandwich?” was won by Anne Griffiths with her choice of egg and Marmite.

The next meeting is a social evening, on Wednesday, December 9, at 7.15pm in the community centre. The competition is “My favourite Christmas decoration” and there will be a fun quiz where members bring along an unusual or puzzling article and put them in a “lucky dip” for the others to try to guess its use.

There will, of course, also be wine and nibbles. Newcomers are always made very welcome.
