Stogursey, Burton and District WI

As the intended speaker lived on the Blackdown Hills, she decided in view of the inclement weather not to risk the journey in the dark, but she was amply substituted by the local “action man”, Paul Tipney, who entertained members with a selection of his wonderful poems.

Paul has been writing poems for the last 15-20 years, and regularly attends the U3A to polish his art, and take up the challenges set – the latest being to write a poem entitled “White”!

Paul’s deep love of the countryside and keenly observant eye showed in all his work and members were easily transported to a bluebell wood in spring, watched a barn owl hunting, and even to the opening meet where they could almost smell the polished leather!

His great sense of humour shone forth in the fate of the “Chinese Vase” (vaguely reminiscent of a television advert for something or other), and the less pleasant habits of dogs, but also a deeply serious side in mourning the passing of traditional crafts such as hedge-laying, and the destruction of habitat by our passion for road building and fast cars.

Paul has obviously lived a very varied and interesting life, and members hope he will come back and tell them more about what he did before he started jumping out of aeroplanes and running marathons. Thank you, Paul.

The speaker for the March meeting will be fellow member Pearl about breeding and show dogs. Visitors will be very welcome.
