ONCE again the brave members of Mark WI ventured out on a cold evening to find out what events they may wish to attend.
There were two party invitations from other institutes: a Knoll Group meeting, and of course, the very popular Spring soup lunch with Jumble crumble to look forward to. After deciding which they would like to attend, Mr Les Cloutman, took members through the ‘Life of a Naturalist’, Spring through to Winter, (although not a Naturist - it’s too cold for that!) Les explained that this is a very diverse County, which boasts it’s own rare orchid, The Lizard orchid, thought to be extinct until found growing in the same spot as last seen in the 1920s.
Also, the Cheddar Pink, which has survived the Ice Age. He went on to explain that when people throw their unwanted plants into hedgerows and woodland, thinking how nice they will look, this leads to the decline of our native species.
As many of these European plants are so vigorous, our native plants cannot compete.
It would be a great shame to lose our attractive native plants. He was thanked for his interesting talk by Mrs Brenda Brooke.
The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Thursday March 5 at The Church Hall, Mark. The speaker will be Mrs Alison Crowther-Smith on Shibori Knitted Felt.
