IT’S already February and we must reprise our recent events. All our Christmas meetings were well attended, culminating in a rousing New Year’s Eve Party to welcome 2009.
On January 17 a coach load went to Newquay for a 4 day “Roudn The World” event, calling in en–route to the “Jamaica Inn” on Bodmin Moor and not a smuggler in sight! At the Barrowfield Hotel in Newquay we quickly changed into our Kaftans and Fez’s for the “Moroccan” evening; followed on the next night with a “Spanish” theme, culminating with the “British” evening on the last night, British Bankers, Morris Men and a myriad of other national characters abounded. The coach driver generously took us on drives around Cornwall during the day.
The meeting on January 30 also gave us a touch of the highlands with “Burns Night”. Kilts and plaid witnessed Ted Hughes doing justice to the event with his reading of Rabbie Burns’ “Address To A Haggis”, followed by a hefty gulp of whisky – SLANCHE!!
The competition was for “Red Dessert”, judged by Colin Brown with Tricia as steward. George Hingston was first, with Gordon Perry second, Shirley Marshall third and Margaret Perry fourth.
Shirley Marshall announced some great events for 2009, starting with our Annual ‘Valentine’ Dinner Dance on February 14 at East Bridgwater School; followed by many events through the spring including hog roasts, the annual Wales and West Competition Weekend at Sand Bay, and invitations to gatherings at local clubs Nailsea and Mendip.
Members were asked to note our AGM this year is on March 27 and before that our next meeting is on February 27 at Northgate Function Rooms, starting at 7.45pm.
