East Quantocks Probus Club

MORE than one hundred members and wives of the East Quantock Probus Club met in North Petherton’s community centre for the annual Ladies’ Invitation meeting on Wednesday, January 14.

After various items of business, members were addressed by Mr and Mrs Philip Smeed on ‘Municipal matters’ and were fascinated by the wide range of topics covered. A former Police Officer, Mr Smeed, who has served as a District Councillor, spoke with pride on the restoration of Bridgwater’s Town status, as well of the numerous blue plaques, marking places of historical and archaeological interest. These also help people with genealogical research.

He then outlined his various civic responsibilities, with their conflicting interests between town and district for the people involved, seeing himself as ‘a catalyst for the community.” Mrs Smeed then spoke of their year as Mayor and Mayoress of Bridgwater, with their full and varied diary of engagements in and around Bridgwater, throughout Somerset and in Europe, with a number of twinning associations on the continent.

February’s meeting will be addressed by Kate Buff on the work of Hestercombe Gardens. The year’s programme of social events is taking shape nicely, with mini-breaks and day out, which may include theatre as well.
