OLYMPIC Torch organisers in Taunton are appealing for 150 missing banners to be returned after today’s successful relay through the town.

The 2.5m-long banners, like the one pictured on this page, were displayed on the crowd control barriers in North Street and the town centre.

This evening, Taunton Deane Council, which helped host the torch visit, said 150 had gone missing and sent out an urgent appeal for their return.

A spokesman said: “The banners are part of the Olympic Torch tour and need to be passed on to the next community welcoming the torch to its streets.

“We’d appeal to people’s honesty here and ask them to give the banners back.

“We need them back as soon as possible – please return them to Deane House, in Belvedere Road, Taunton.”

The spokesman said banners would be gratefully received on a ‘no questions asked’ amnesty basis.

Sad that after an historic day Taunton will be remembered as the town were thirds made off with the a banners.

I drive through town earlier and saw at least half a dozen being carried away.

We're really sorry to hear this news. We have printed PVC banners for Malvern District Council's Olympic Torch and have heard some similar stories in their area. http://www.printedba

Personally, I think it's unfair to say its "Pathetic" and "disgusting". I was there watching the torch go through, and afterwards many of the council workers taking down the signs were willingly handing them out to people that asked, with little kids taking them home to put on their walls. People just want memorabilia, not to ruin it for others. And after the pathetic olympic ticket selling scheme I can understand why people want to have something to make them feel 'part of it'.

Well, with people using words like "perfetic" and "discusting" I can see that a lot of the stereotypes about Taunton are true.
As for nicking the banners, fair play to them. At least the community is getting something back from this hideous waste of money.

some readers, are not as articulate and well versed in the english language as others. i even know of some younger generation readers. so relax your comments about perfecting peoples grammar and just understand the points people are trying to make. the only grammar and spelling we should be correcting is the newspaper editors, as they get paid for it. unlike us readers.
