FIRE crews are urging people to take care when using chip pans.
Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said 27% of casualties in 2010-11 were chip pan related, showing how dangerous they can be.
“From the chip shop to the kitchen table, chips will quite rightly be on the menu this week,” said fire investigation ffficer, Mike Burroughs.
“But the smallest distraction when using a hot chip pan could lead to a fire in a matter of moments.
"Oven chips are a safer and healthier way to enjoy your favourite, but if you do choose to deep fat fry please don’t leave the pan unattended.
"If your pan does catch light, don’t throw water over it– get out, stay out and call 999.”
The service issued some safety tips, including never fill the pan will too much oil, don't let the oil overheat, never throw water over the pan, don't cook after alcohol, and test your smoke alarm weekly.
